The Symptomatology of a Universalized               Concept of Trauma

On the Failing of Freud’s Reading of Tasso in the Trauma of History.

(in: Taboo, Trauma, Holocaust. New German Critique Nr.90, Fall 2003. pp. 85-94.)

The article presents a critique of the universalization of trauma as historical experience which levels the radical specificity of trauma in Freud’s psychoanalysis, based in the dialectic relationship and fundamental asynchronicity between the conscious and the unconscious. The critique is developed in a detailed analysis of the misreading of Freudian key-concepts and his reference to Tasso’s 1099 zurückgeht und im 12. und 13. der zwanzig Gesänge von Gerusalemme Liberata in Cathy Caruth’s Unclaimed Experience (1996).
