The European Intellectual Heritage of Aby Warburg (Martin Roth Symposion 2018)

Sigrid Weigel discusses the topicality of an intellectual heritage that emerged around 1900 from the reverse side of the dominant European colonial and nationalistic past and was developed by scholars who operated at the margins of German academia. In 10 theses she presents this early ‘Kulturwissenschaft’ and its approach to culture – based on transgression, exchange, translation, and transformation – which provides a potentiality and epistemological impulses for the role of European culture in a global world today.
